Curatorial Statement 展览概述“Earth Heat Flow: The Visitor Who Returns to Solar Time” is the Art and Technology Section of the First Beijing Biennial.

The exhibition titled “Earth Heat Flow,” based on the unique winter heating in Beijing, attempts to discuss how to understand the technological culture and ecological status quo through the lens of thermal media and invites visitors to take a journey on “melting” from the perspective of dynamic “heat flow.” During the journey, imaginary creatures with heat-synesthesia will experience the daily temperature that human beings are accustomed to, track how heat exists as a foreshadowing of the contemporary scientific and technological system, and speculate on notions of entropy and time - both closely related to “heat.” Each work is included into the “melting” narrative, which may change the object’s shape or reveal hidden things. Melting may be violent or silent, like technology, which is both a dynamic plastic force and a revealing force.

The privileged sunshine in winter of Beijing will be splashed on the “hotter” side of the exhibition hall. The works here discuss how our digital infrastructure (data centers, network switches, and optical fibers) constantly absorb the planet’s energy and build a stable thermal environment. Being Radiotropic describes our dependence on electromagnetic signals with life entities’ reaction to solar radiation. The Copper Tree reminds us how the copper element that supports optical cables and wires is generated from the earth’s veins. Porosity Valley imagines how a living element travels as half a mineral entity and half a digital bit. While Analog Sun Tracking replaces the heated sun in the human visual spectrum with black holes; Saros implies the fatal relationship between the solar flare explosion and the electronic system with a ridiculous fable.

Captured Nature reminds us how the man-made “cold/hot” system continuously supports a more moderate and pleasant living environment. However, these control technologies are also involved in the planet’s natural cold and heat flow for water and wind. Even ocean currents are cooling the roaring machine room, and the neon on which the lithography machine depends also relies on the low-temperature distillation of air by the separation equipment (Do not dwell on that hazy glow). This inlaid relationship of energy, suggesting the fragile and dark side of the man-made technological environment, leads us to the deeper and colder side of the exhibition hall, where the stable environment we created by regulating temperature and heat energy is disturbed and reversed. Life from remote underground servers penetrates people’s skin via liquid (Aquaphobia). Three groups of works related to glaciers depict the history of energy exploitation, cold war facilities, and ancient microorganisms solidified by ice.

When that computer-rendered iceberg collapsed in silence like Greenland Fjord (Melting into Time), or the fireworks in the computer quietly bloomed (Fireworks Universe), we seem to feel that the earth naturally contains the potential energy of entropy increases and the desire for reversing entropy, as well as the tension between the two. As Endangered Herbarium tries to store plants’ life, this storage’s effectiveness goes with the sun’s rhythm. In the chaotic zone before the artificial light sources light up (891 Dusks: An Encyclopedia of Psychological Experiences) and after the natural light sources dissipate, when all the machine-generated words become fuzzy lumps with the thermal paper exposed to the air (A Sigh), people stand in the heat flow of the earth again to understand everything carried by our technology and ecosystem and the epoch witnessed by the vertical space between the solar radiation and the thermal structure of the lithosphere, or, the geographical territory between the polar frozen soil and the equatorial sunshine.

Everything Begins to Melt Here...

Please follow me, visitors from the gentle world, you are bathing in the sun in the warm winter of Beijing.

The so-called “cosmic microwave background radiation” is the thin air with hazy glow here. Yes, we are “thermal” animals, just like the fact that you are visual animals. For us, “heat” cannot be naturally divided. It always disperses, germinates, entangles itself, and travels at will, and you seem to have the ability to decompose, transport, cut off, transmit and even purify it.

Freon keeps your skin dense and even in summer. You create pure heat blocks with clear geometric edges and name them “microwave oven” and “skating rink.” The heat crawls along the electric tower, optical fiber, and power grid section by section, outlining the ambiguous universe in our eyes, rising one after another. You have even constructed a profound tone that we rarely see. It is on a square called a quantum computer in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena (to quote your description of “heat”). It operates below 15 degrees Kelvin, “colder” than outer space. As for the high-energy sustained pulse in Joint European Torus near Oxford, UK, in our eyes, it can almost rival the roar of the sun.

There are many pieces of material evidence about your gentle world that we have collected: red glowing tubes, orange light films, instruments for tracking the sun’s path, and devices for detecting electromagnetic landscapes. Visitors from the gentle world, you do not always agree with each other: some of you are obsessed with domiciling heat, while others are interested in the hidden, escaping, and discrete heat and are even able to smell the red backbite bred by the chaotic mother earth. Even if it is not as extreme as the UV disaster imagined by Ellen Feist, it does make the glacier retreat and the sea rise.

Please make a turn here, visitors from the gentle world. Although you are outstanding heat managers, unlike us, who cannot isolate the “heat” feeling for the existence of heat synesthesia, at least at some moments, we can understand each other’s feelings. In 1859, the solar storm nearly destroyed the telegraph system that was taking shape back then. Many of you, like us, witnessed the strange flash in the polar sky. You, smart people, have realized that the answer to “heat” is sometimes buried in ice. Scientists among you are chasing the history of these solar storms from the nitrogen oxides deposited in the thin layer of ice core rich in nitrate. Data and genes of everything are right there in Svalbard Archipelago in the polar circle, with more probes stretching to coal and oil under the ice cover. You will tactfully describe the answer as the politics of energy, climate, and technology. The cycle of heat and cold entangles solar radiation, polar permafrost, and lithosphere. Narrow roads sometimes emerge in the area where the glaciers are fading. You are driving to the past when you drive here and track the irretrievable edge of the ice.

Presumably, you also find that this is a place where some entropy chaos were accidentally sealed. In a sense, we are you in the past or the remote future. To us, the appearance of iron does not mean the death of stars. Entropy is no longer a secret. Neither is the end of life a sigh. We never read the fluctuation of mercury in the scale or managed to tame the heat in a room of several square feet. We never built a heating network covering the city or a machine eye to detect the temperature of everything, but we grasped the existence of “heat” on a larger scale. “Heat” is in our eyes and bodies, surging at its will like hurricanes and eddies connecting the core of the earth and the sun or continuous fog under the ice field. In fact, the combination of hot sun and dark and cold sky leads to the existence of low entropy. The world is never really gentle.

Now, I'm going back to the solar time. I hope you will enjoy your stay here, visitors from the gentle world.

We are radiotropes. Just as other lifeforms orientate themselves in response to the sun's radiation, many contemporary human behaviours are shaped by electromagnetic landscapes and signal topographies. We prepare for the quiet zone of the subway and notice how data speeds vary as we move between networks and across geographies. Being Radiotropic is a series of eccentric wireless routers that explore this sensitivity and that asks how we might otherwise design our wireless infrastructures. Each router provides an open wireless network that misbehaves and functions in unexpected and eccentric ways. Could our radiotropism be leveraged to attune us to ways of other lifeforms and planetary forces?

In the gray room, an old slide projector is automatically playing some blurred images of photographs that gradually form a channel in time. Continuing inside, in the dark room, an electronic tube chandelier modeled after the chandeliers in Eastern European subway stations emits a ruddy glow, like the color of a film darkroom. Only this light keeps flickering like breathing, a current that is passing through the neon gas inside the glass tube, which then expands into a warm sound through the acoustics. Neon comes from the sizzling past of the cosmic nucleosynthesis period, and after a long journey through time, it has been separated and lit up by man from the extremely cold liquid air. Since 1898, from neon lights to particle detection "bubble chambers" to lithography machines, neon has been quietly participating in human history, just as it breathes in and out of our bodies uninterruptedly. Do not Dwell on that Hazy Glow is about the technological, aesthetic and ideological "etching" of neon gas in the form of light, and combines texts on gas and light from ancient scriptures to lead people into a thought about gas.

The work presents the artist’s research on widespread yet undiagnosed symptoms of "evening uneasiness." Tabulated as an index, this book categorizes and conceptualizes the “disquiet” through hundreds of psycho-poetic entries. Adapted from the pseudo-scientific publication, “New Comprehensive Homoeopathic Materia Medica of the Mind", these encyclopedic entries list the “symptoms” from the 891 transient experiences of dusk. Each entry embodies the ephemerality of such experience as well as the ineffable nature of its narrative. In adopting the pseudo-scientific approach to archive literary experience, an unknown lyrical form takes shape, for its semantics become a probe for ambiguity.
This encyclopedic presentation is accompanied by a group of text panels documenting the artist's modifications of the original text, and a recording of the selected entries read in English and Chinese along with meditative music.

"Endangered herbarium" is an artwork that highlights local endangered plants and speculates on the future of archiving. For his first exhibition at Art Biesenthal in Berlin this summer, this poetic piece will take the form of a triptych of transparent blue Plexiglass sheets.
Three SD card shaped panels with slight undulations on their surface - reveal and project onto a plane - thanks to the sunlight that passes through them - silhouettes of plants composed of light and shadow. Each pane of glass contains an image of a type of local endangered plant that may eventually disappear due to global warming or the destruction of natural habitats. Letters are also engraved on the plexiglass, corresponding to the Latin name of each plant. The three featured plants are a "Apium nodiflorum", a "highly endangered" species, a "Papaver occidentale", a type of poppy that is "threatened" and a "Dryopteris cristata", a plant considered "vulnerable" by the red list of endangered plants. The blue colour of the projected shadow echoes a cyanotype effect (the first negative monochrome photographic process of 1842 by which a Prussian blue photographic print is obtained, the first cyanotype was the image of a herbarium composed of seaweed by Anna Atkins). This "herbarium in danger" has the particularity of evolving during the day according to the position and the light intensity of the sun: changing from a very clear image to a blurred and distorted one. The plants hidden inside the surface of the plexiglass only appear thanks to the sunlight, thus directly echoing the process of photosynthesis that every plant needs to survive. On a bad weather day and during the night they disappear completely, leaving only the engraved letters (their name in Latin), as the only remaining memory of the plant.

Saros presents a dystopian story. At the apex of a new cycle of solar activity, after the solar eclipse of the summer solstice, a family transform into their domestic environment of a soap, plastic bag, simulated plant and electric plug, in the shadow of the eclipse and the disruption of the electronic system.
As the final stage of the Download Life series, the film, like a hallucination created by the fragments of the previous works, uses digital models as a medium for submersion in modern life, including a series of irregular structures behind them: networks, databases, QR codes, planetary matter, cosmic cycles, artificial environments, mysterious signals, and the order and breakdown of the mundane human life. It recreates the annular eclipse of the summer solstice in 2020 and invokes the deadly relationship between solar activity and electronic systems to touch on the uncertainties that exist in both the digital and physical world – in the pre-Internet era, a breakdown in electronic systems caused by a massive solar storm had occurred, which could turn out to be a catastrophe today, however, the next one cannot yet be predicted. As a silent aside, an intelligent machine recounts its experience of a malfunction, as if describing an illness, a systemic disruption. It also talks about “deformation” and “disappearance” that might happen in a state of overload, and the flow of boundaries and concepts. Yet it may also be mere gibberish.
The film was shot in the neighborhoods of the Capital Belt of Beijing, where the artist lived during the lockdown, and invited friends, neighbors, and domestic and maintenance workers to join the performance . In addition, as a parallel line, the audience can scan the QR codes that appear in the film to access different screen spaces. These include a short notice, and two pieces of advertisement for a digital perfume and a digital watch, which can be accessed in its digital form, however the virtual world does not smell and the watch can not indicate the time.
While the Chinese title means one day in eternity, the English title of the work, Saros, means the certain period of time used to predict the cycle of eclipses, where the Sun, Earth and Moon return to similar corresponding positions, so that almost the same eclipses will occur again.

Stillstand is a triptych of 60-second time-lapse video loops showing the path of the Sun over 24 hours. The work is part of a continuing body of research started in 2013 on the perception of celestial bodies. Contrary to our normal perception, the Sun does not wander through the image but appears to stand still at the centre of the frame. The viewer is made aware of the planet earth revolving because of a temporarily stabilized viewpoint. This apparently neutral view is in fact carefully orchestrated with the use of a purpose-built apparatus. The Analog Sun Tracker is a motorized revolving camera mounted on a tripod which is in turn installed parallel to the axis of our planet, calculated to each specific location. The camera is thus allowed to complete one revolution in 24 hours, keeping track of the sun in the center of the frame. For the triptych, the artist traveled to three locations: Shanghai, Rotterdam and Kjølleford, separated from each other by 20 degrees latitude. In each case the recording was made in the month September, close to the equinox, and subsequently edited into a one-minute video loop. The three videos are synchronised and appear to show a single solar day observed from three distinct locations. The presentation of the work consists of the triptych of video screens and the Sun Tracker itself. The device is placed in the exhibition space as a live video feed installation, accelerated to match the speed of the time-lapse films. In this way the viewer gains access to the artist’s observation process.

As all the things are designed to be functional- especially Artificial Intelligent, I desperate to see AI one day become another form of existence besides human beings – what if they become nothingness, they output only – a sigh? The AI model is trained with collected diaries during this decade in China. As it finally can generate diaries for future day on behalf of people, but it connects to a CNC machine which only outputs hot air. The diary it generates at the end become hot air. The thermal paper is exposed to the hot air and reveals a blurry shape of the text. Experiences are not shared among individual, the project from the beginning is not expecting people understand each other. Feelings just don’t flow freely from one individual to another even though you share the same language. The project simply does not intend to force anyone to understand anyone, including AIs and humans. The trained data are fed into the AI and AI makes an effort to create, but all at the end become a sigh, a breath, or a nothingness.Supported by CAC & Duke Kunshan University
